Baby Names That Travel: Choosing a Name for Two Cultures

For families that span languages and borders, a name that works everywhere is a gift.

If your family spans two languages, countries, or cultures, the name you choose has an extra job to do: it needs to work in more than one place. A name that's effortless in one language can be a daily struggle in another. With a bit of care, though, you can find one that feels natural on both sides of the family, and gives your child an easy passage between them.

Look for names that already cross over

Some names exist, more or less intact, across many languages, usually because they share a religious or classical root. Anna, Maria, David, Daniel, Sofia, and Thomas are recognizable and pronounceable across much of Europe, the Americas, and beyond. These "passport names" spare your child a lifetime of spelling and re-pronouncing.

Mind the sounds each language lacks

The most common cross-cultural snag is a sound that simply doesn't exist in one of your languages. The English "th", the Spanish rolled "r", the French "u", and certain vowel distinctions can turn a beautiful name into a hard one abroad. Say your candidates aloud in both languages, ideally with a native speaker of each, and listen for the sounds that don't survive the trip.

Check the accidental meanings

A name that's lovely in one language can mean something unfortunate, or just funny, in another. This is worth a genuine check with someone who speaks the other language natively, not just a quick search. It's a five-minute step that prevents a lifetime of awkwardness.

Spelling across alphabets and accents

Popularity travels unevenly

A name can be a top-10 staple in one country and almost unheard of in another. That's often a feature: a name that's classic to one side of the family and refreshingly unusual to the other. The per-country counts on every name page here let you see exactly how a name lands in each place, so you can find one that feels right on both sides.
