Nicknames: Choosing a Name for the Name
The everyday name your child actually goes by deserves as much thought as the one on the certificate.
Here's something easy to overlook: the name on the birth certificate often isn't the name your child goes by all day. Nicknames do a huge amount of the real work, and thinking about them upfront saves surprises later. Whether you love nicknames or want to avoid them, a little planning helps.
Two philosophies
Parents tend to fall into two camps. Some choose a longer formal name specifically for its nicknames, Elizabeth opens the door to Liz, Beth, Eliza, Betty, and more, giving a child options for a lifetime. Others prefer to name the child exactly what they'll be called, picking Beth or Eliza outright so there's no ambiguity. Neither is better; just know which you're doing.
The case for a formal name with options
- Flexibility over a lifetime. A child can be Charlie in the playground and Charles on a law firm's letterhead.
- Room to grow into it. A name that feels big for a newborn (Theodore, Penelope) has a friendly short form for the toddler years (Theo, Penny).
- They get to choose. As they grow, your child can decide which version fits them.
The case for naming them what you'll call them
If you know you'll only ever call her Mia, there's no need to put Amelia on the certificate and spend years explaining. Short given names are clean, unambiguous, and increasingly popular in their own right.
Nicknames you didn't plan for
Even if you pick a short name, others may shorten or lengthen it anyway. Test-drive the obvious variations before you commit: What rhymes with it? What do the first few letters spell? What will a playground do with it? You can't control everything, but you can rule out the names with an unfortunate obvious nickname.
A quick checklist
- List every nickname the name could produce, flattering and not.
- Decide whether you're happy for your child to be called any of them.
- If you have a strong preference, plan to model it consistently from day one, it's the best (if imperfect) way to make it stick.
